Karen serves as the Interim Executive Director for the CIE alongside being the Economic Development Advisor to the President of Cal Poly. After nearly three decades as a tech executive with companies like Oracle, Cisco, GoDaddy and Brex, Karen decided to shift her focus toward her beloved community of San Luis Obispo. Now, she dedicates her time to shaping the future of innovation and economic development in the region, drawing on her extensive experience in global communications, crisis management and corporate strategy.
Karen’s passion for entrepreneurship stems from her deep respect for the bravery it takes to walk the entrepreneurial path. Throughout her career, she’s witnessed the transformational power of technology and the incredible impact that entrepreneurship can have on industries and communities. Now, she’s excited to bring that passion to the CIE, where she believes the best days are still ahead.
Outside of work, Karen’s creativity shines through in her love for fashion and design, which she sees as powerful forms of self-expression. An outdoor enthusiast, Karen enjoys running trails with her dog, Frida, and riding her horse, Safari. She also finds joy in spending time with her family and is passionate about wild horse advocacy, women in technology and social activism. And if you ever need a cheese recommendation, Karen’s your go-to—she once dreamed of starting a business called “The Cheese Algorithm”!
